Surrealism Test Shots Review

 Test Shot Review

During this test shoot, I was careful to ensure I was relating each shot to Surrealism. By continually thinking of this I was able to create 5 different ideas based around Surrealism. Firstly, I decided to research multiple ideas on Pinterest to gather my thoughts and ideas for this topic. I created a board that involves various surrealist like images that are related to the subject of 'found objects'. I decided to focus on 'found objects' as combining two objects irrelevant to each other creates an unsettling mood. As surrealism is based around the uncanny and unnerving, I based my decision on this as well as my artist research.
When considering the composition my photos, I had to think about the characteristics of Surrealism. These involve: the uncanny, dream-like states, evocative etc... When keeping these characteristics in mind I was able to create surrealist photos that captured the essence of surrealism. Within my photos, I have used these characteristics to define my photos.

For example my cracked egg image. I decided to use a cracked egg as an egg symbolizes new life. However by cracking the image and adding grass and a golf ball rolling out of the egg, adds a unique twist to the piece. Moreover, it surprises the audience as goes against nature as a chick isn't hatching from the egg. I believe this links in with the Surrealism topic as each object is irrelevant to each other.

My next idea was an ice pop. However instead of ice, I used a sponge. By doing this I am making this ice pop unusable as it can no longer be eaten. In addition, it creates a sense of uneasiness as imaging biting into a sponge is strange and unsettling. I believe this links to surrealism as adding two 'found objects' together that create an disturbing feeling and aims to look at society in a twisted way.

My third idea was chewing gum. However i replaced the chewing gum with uncooked bacon. I decided to use uncooked bacon as it is dangerous and disgusting. As chewing gum is suppose to help digest food and make your breath smell minty, uncooked bacon can cause health problems and is discomforting to think about eating. I believe this links to surrealism as linking two objects that are linked in one way but twisting it so it creates an abnormal outlook on an everyday object.

My fourth idea was creating a handbag. To do this I used a play on words. I changed a tea bag into a handbag. By doing this I am re-purposing an object commonly used for consumption. In addition, it makes the tea bag unusable as in reality the tea bag wouldn't be strong enough to hold everyday objects we carry around with us. Moreover, a tea bag is small making the tea bag unusable as a handbag as only small items would fit; only a few as well. I believe this links to surrealism as it is re-purposing an object that can now be considered unusable.

For my final idea I decided to re-purpose another item(s). I decided to re-purpose two cupids to paint brush holders. However before adapting them, I believe these cupids were unusable as their arms are connected. Also one of the cupids cannot stand up. Therefore I believe that these cupid were originally holding something which made them usable as a decoration. Ont he other hand I have changed them to paint brush holders. Also I decided to have the image look like the cupid(s) were paint with the brushes. I achieved this by painting strips of coloured painting on to the paper then leaving blots of paint on the brushes. By doing this it looks like the cupid(s) are paint with the brushes seeming like they are alive or possessed. I believe this links to surrealism as these wouldn't normally be associated with each other. And normally the brushes would be used by a person to paint a cupid (if religiously associated).

For my shoot I collected various objects. I collected egg shells, golf ball, sponges, ice pop sticks, cupid statues, paint brushes, grass, tea bags, chewing gum wrapper, cut outs of handles and bacon. I collected these after creating my ideas inspired by the artists I researched and searching Pinterest. Overall I believe that the ideas that worked best were the cracked egg, chewing gum and the cupid(s). I think this because they embody the idea of surrealism better than the others.
